Exquisite Creatures - Guest Experience Case Study - June 2026
Project type
Experience Design • Guest Experience Analysis • Exhibit Design • Creative Strategy
Date
June 2026
Location
Seattle, WA, USA
Project Overview
As part of Purdue University's Themed Entertainment Design Certificate, I conducted an experiential case study of Exquisite Creatures, an exhibition by artist Christopher Marley.
Rather than reviewing the exhibit solely from an artistic perspective, I approached it through the lens of themed entertainment and immersive experience design, analyzing how storytelling, sensory engagement, guest flow, education, and business strategy work together to shape the overall visitor experience.
Objective
Evaluate an existing attraction through a themed entertainment framework while identifying opportunities to strengthen guest engagement without compromising the artist's original vision.
My Process
During multiple walkthroughs of the exhibit I documented observations surrounding:
Storytelling
Guest journey
Emotional progression
Environmental design
Sensory engagement
Audience demographics
Operational flow
Revenue opportunities
Educational value
Future experiential enhancements
I then synthesized these observations into a formal design case study and presentation.
Key Takeaways
One of the exhibit's greatest strengths is its ability to transform natural specimens into moments of wonder through composition, scale, lighting, and craftsmanship.
Rather than relying on technology, the experience encourages guests to slow down, observe, and appreciate biodiversity from a new perspective.
Its open-ended exploration allows every visitor to create their own personal journey while blending science, conservation, education, and fine art into a cohesive experience.
Design Analysis
Through the evaluation I explored:
Guest Journey
Arrival experience
Orientation
Self-guided exploration
Educational touchpoints
Emotional pacing
Exit experience
Sensory Design
Visual composition
Ambient sound
Lighting
Spatial rhythm
Environmental storytelling
Audience
Families
Nature enthusiasts
Art lovers
Students
Tourists
Photography audiences
Opportunities for Future Growth
One of the more rewarding aspects of the project was exploring how immersive storytelling techniques could enhance an already successful exhibit.
Potential concepts included:
Environmental soundscapes unique to each habitat
Interactive projection mapping
Subtle scent integration
Expanded conservation storytelling
XR educational layers
Behind-the-scenes preservation experiences
The goal wasn't to redesign the exhibit, but to explore how additional experiential layers could deepen emotional connection while remaining true to Christopher Marley's artistic vision.
Business Perspective
Beyond guest experience, I also evaluated how the exhibit supports long-term sustainability through multiple revenue channels, including:
Timed ticketing
Retail merchandise
Fine art sales
Educational programming
Museum partnerships
Community engagement
Approaching the project from both a creative and operational perspective reinforced how successful experiences balance artistic intent with practical business considerations.
Reflection
One of the biggest lessons from this project was recognizing that immersive experiences don't always require elaborate technology.
Sometimes the strongest emotional connections come from thoughtful storytelling, careful pacing, and giving guests permission to slow down and truly observe.
As someone pursuing a career in immersive environments and themed entertainment, projects like this continue to shape how I evaluate spaces, identify opportunities, and think beyond what exists today toward what an experience could become.
