DreamWorks Move-It Farewell Parade - Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas 2018
Project type
Themed Entertainment
Date
2018
Location
Royal Caribbean - Oasis of the Seas
The Move it! Move it! Parade was a signature high-energy procession on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas (and other Oasis-class ships) that featured over 70 performers and iconic characters from DreamWorks Animation. Although this specific parade ended in 2019 when the partnership concluded, its legacy as a major Royal Promenade event remains a highlight of the ship's history.
Show Overview: Move it! Move it! Parade
The parade was a massive, choreographed production that transformed the Royal Promenade into a vibrant festival.
Characters: Featured fan favorites like Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Puss in Boots from Shrek; Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo, and King Julien from Madagascar; and Po from Kung Fu Panda.
Performance: The show included professional dancers, acrobats, and stilt-walkers, all performing to high-tempo music from the films, such as the titular "I Like to Move It".
Timing: Typically held on embarkation day and toward the end of the sailing, acting as a grand welcome or farewell for guests.
The Lighting Technician’s Role
The Lighting Technician (LGHT) is vital for ensuring the parade's visual impact, particularly in the unique environment of the ship's Royal Promenade, which lacks the controlled atmosphere of a traditional theater.
Programming and Operation: Operating advanced lighting consoles (like GrandMA or HOG) to trigger pre-programmed cues that sync with the parade's music and movement. As well as operating spot lights for specific timed performances and coordinating with performing flyer rigging teams.
Atmospheric Effects: Managing low-fog, haze, and pyrotechnic systems to add texture and drama to the character entrances.
Maintenance: Ensuring all "intelligent" moving fixtures and conventional lights are functional, cleaned, and properly aimed before each performance.
Safety: Monitoring the safe operation of all effects near guests and performers, following strict maritime safety protocols.
Job Description
"As the Lighting Technician for the Move it! Move it! Parade on Oasis of the Seas, I am the heartbeat of the show’s visual energy. My day starts with a full 'lamp check' and system test of the dozens of moving fixtures rigged above the Royal Promenade. Before the first character even steps out, I’m at my console, ensuring the show control and time-code distribution are perfectly synced so every flash of color hits exactly on the beat of the music.
During the parade, I’m not just pushing buttons; I’m managing a complex network of atmospheric haze and strobe effects, all while maintaining the artistic integrity designed by the original production team. If a fixture goes down or a cue misses, I have to troubleshoot in real-time under the pressure of thousands of watching guests. Between shows, my role shifts to a 'Tech on Duty' rotation, where I maintain equipment across various lounges and the main theater, ensuring the ship's entire entertainment lighting rig stays at 100% readiness."
