West End to Broadway 2017 - Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas

Project type

Theater

Date

2017

Location

Jewel of the Seas (Caribbean to the Mediterranean Sea)

Role

Technical Stage Staff

West End to Broadway was a Royal Caribbean original production on the Jewel of the Seas that took audiences on a musical journey from the lights of New York to the stages of London. The show featured a high-energy collection of iconic show tunes ranging from the classics of Andrew Lloyd Webber to contemporary hits like Bohemian Rhapsody. All performed by a live orchestra and a powerhouse cast in the Coral Theater.

As a member of the Technical Stage Staff (STAT), I was responsible for the mechanical heartbeat of the show. I worked behind the scenes to ensure that every technical element, from automated scenery to high-speed costume changes, was executed with precision while the ship was at sea.

Key Technical Duties Included:

Stage Setup: I prepped the deck by checking spike marks for scenic placement and ensuring the stage surface was cleaned for dancer safety.

Audio & Orchestra: I assisted with the setup of the orchestra pit, managed wireless microphones for the vocalists, and monitored audio feeds for the live band.

Lighting & Spots: I operated the follow-spots, tracking performers through complex choreography, and assisted with the maintenance of automated lighting rigs.

Automation Cues: I monitored and confirmed all mechanized movements, calling out "clear" to the Stage Manager and verifying when scenic pieces had completed their travel.

Backstage Support: I managed the "deck track" by moving props, assisting with quick-change transitions in the wings, and ensuring talent was in position before the curtain rose.

Safety Protocols: I followed strict maritime safety standards, which included securing equipment for heavy sea states and implementing emergency protocols if ship movement interfered with the performance.
